Headlines about cyber espionage usually focus on China, Russia, North Korea, and the United States, whether as the attacking state or the victim of attack. Many of these attackers use advance persistent threats (APTs) as their modus operandi to stealthily enter networks or systems and remain undetected for years and years. They have influenced the outcome of political elections, created havoc at international events, and helped companies succeed or fail. These deliberately recruited and highly valued cybercriminals have the technical know-how to shut down anything from government infrastructures to financial systems or utility resources. Take this into the cyber world, and the spies are armies of nefarious hackers from around the globe who use cyber warfare for economic, political, or military gain. A variation of this practice occurs when a competitor lures away a valuable employee with offers of more money and benefits, in the hope that the pirated worker will make his store of secrets available to his new employer.Cyber espionage is a form of cyber attack that steals classified, sensitive data or intellectual property to gain an advantage over a competitive company or government entity.Įspionage, according to Merriam-Webster, is “the practice of spying or using spies to obtain information about the plans and activities especially of a foreign government or a competing company.” A more common technique is the group conspiracy: several employees, usually technicians and others of high managerial calibre, leave a company and set up a competitive firm capitalizing on confidences they gained while on the payroll of their former employer. The disloyal employee may furtively seek out competitors and peddle confidential data to the highest bidder. Analysis of competitor products is yet another source of important commercial intelligence.Īctual trade secrets may find their way into the open market through several channels. Equally fruitful are regular lines of communication, such as salesmen’s reports, trade magazines, newsletters, business conventions, trade fairs and exhibits, and contacts with suppliers. Some large retail chains, for example, employ corps of agents to check on prices and products of competitors by comparative shopping. ![]() A by-product of the technological revolution, industrial espionage is a reaction to the efforts of many businessmen to keep secret their designs, formulas, manufacturing processes, research, and future plans in order to protect or expand their shares of the market.Ī considerable amount of data on what the competition is doing comes from routine and undramatic sources.
